Toronto Maple Leafs – A brief history of a championship team

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the much loved and historical ‘Original 6’ teams of the NHL. This means they have been around longer than most of their fans themselves. The team as a club was born in 1917 but they were called Toronto Arenas and referred to as either the Torontos’ or the Blueshirts which was what they were called when they played in the NHA before the creation of the NHL. Only two years following its inception (in the NHL) the club was sold and then named The Toronto St. Pats. It was only eight years later that they finally took on the iconic name and famous logo of Toronto Maple Leafs.

They are the second most valuable franchise in the NHL after the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs tickets are big sellers. The club has been around for over 100 years and has won the Stanley Cup championships 13. This puts The Leafs in second with Stanley cup wins behind ‘Original 6’ team and rival the Montreal Canadiens who have won a whopping 24 Stanley cups. Although they haven’t won any in over 50 years since 1967.

In the 100 years they’ve played, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had 2 dynasties. For four years from 1947 to 1951, and then again for five years from 1962 to 1967 when they won their last Stanley Cup Championship. It doesn’t seem to bother the fans much that the Leafs haven’t won in over 50 seasons, not in terms of game attendance. If you ask any Torontonian or Toronto Maple Leaf fan from anywhere for that matter, they’ll tell you, “This year’s the year’. It’s that positive and loyal fan base that has helped carry this team for the last 50 years and will continue into the next 50 as ticket sales for the Maple Leafs have never been undersold.

The Franchise has had many famous players pass through the club doors and has retired and honoured 19. The Toronto Maple Leafs have retired 13 numbers throughout their history and the Leafs have also had several homes. Starting out at the Toronto Arena’s and then moved to the Maple Leaf Gardens in 1930 where they played some of their greatest games and series, including the only Reverse Sweep in Stanley Cup History against the Detroit Redwings. They played at the Maple Leaf Garden until 1999 when they moved to their current address on Bay St. in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre, which is also the home to another huge fan favorite team, The Toronto Raptors.

The Toronto Maple Leafs – 13 Stanley Cup Championships (plus 1)

The Toronto Maple Leafs hold the second most Stanley Cup Championships with 13 wins over all and not including the one they won before they joined the NHL. An interesting fact is that the team which was originally called the BlueShirts and played in the NHA (National Hockey Association) before the creation of the NHL as we know it today, won a championship, but rarely do fans consider this. That might have something to do with the history of how the NHL came to be and or the original owner Eddie Livingston. Law suits and league creations later the Toronto Maple Leafs are proud of the 13 they have within the NHL. Check out the list below to see which years and teams they played. Its not hard to understand why the rivalries between the Toronto Maple Leafs are so deep. They have played and beat the Detroit Redwings 6 times for the Stanley Cup along with 4 times against the Montreal Canadiens, they’ve faced off and won against the Vancouver Millionaires twice and once against the New York Rangers.
