Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment paid $10 million for the team when MLS awarded Toronto an expansion team in 2005. The club was officially named Toronto Football Club on the 11th of May, 2006 but, are fondly called 'The Reds' by the media and fans.
The club started their competitive campaign from 2007 and despite a scoreless streak, the club was quick to establish a tremendous fan support. So much so, that the enthusiastic fan base continues to support the team to the full capacity of 30,991 at the BMO Field.

What followed was an average gameplay despite the fact that, in 2010, the club also hired Jürgen Klinsmann, a former German international and coach to improve the club's game.
2015 saw a drastic change in staff and roster that slowly started building up a refined squad that delivered in 2017 with a domestic treble.

• The team's official colour includes red as the colour for their home jersey, while the away jersey has seen grey, black and presently white; with the Bank of Montreal (BMO) being their primary sponsor.

• Sebastian Giovinco makes for one of their star performers from the time he joined the club in 2015. In fact, he was awarded the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award as well as the 2015 MLS MVP Award the same year itself for his tally of an impressive 22 goals in his debut season.
• At par with Giovinco, is Jozy Altidore who has been impressing everyone with his striking ability since joining the club in 2015. Presently he comfortably sits at 40 goals in 78 games.
• The same season, Greg Vanney was awarded MLS Coach of the Year, while Altidore was awarded the MLS Cup MVP.
• Sebastian Giovinco and captain Michael Bradley are also amongst the highest paid players in MLS, taking the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively after Kaka from Orlando City SC.
